FLL “Super-Powered” Challenge

This year FLL’s theme was “Super-Powered”, this theme dealt with how energy is distributed in our communities and how we can make it better. We had 2 teams this year of 6 kids each, their team names were “BLK (Bright Lego Kids) and Robot-X. They explored the different ways we gather and distribute energy, like; Solar, Hydro, Kinetic, Thermal, etc. They each chose one specific way of energy distribution.  Robot-X went with Kinetic energy by learning about Wind-Turbines and how they work and the other team chose Hydro energy so they created a Dam with a mechanism that would allow for water to flow faster.

They were studying about all of this and also learning to program a robot in a block based programming software called Mindstorm. Not to mention that during this whole process they always needed to maintain the “Core Values” present. FLL’s main thing is “What we learn is more important than what we win” and it is shown by the core values which are “Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Teamwork, Inclusion and Fun”. These values are extremely important to maintain present since it allows us to be and act “human”, to care and help each other no matter what differences we may have.

I invite more kids to join this incredible learning experience. It is something that if you aren’t in it, you can’t really appreciate. But it’s awesome, and the kids have so much fun.

Join Us for next year’s challenge….”Master Piece”

Olimpiadas de Ortografía

Ms. Lourdes Batista, who has led the Spanish Spelling Contest (Olimpiadas de Ortografía) has given us an interview with some insight to this event that has been taking place in school with the participation of students from from 1st to 6th grade.

Its objective is to preserve the correct writing of the words, respecting the rules of spelling and accentuation. The department is committed to ensuring that students are able to write Spanish (the first language for the vast majority) correctly, placing great emphasis on the rules of accentuation. It is important to know the great results and enthusiasm that we have achieved for our students, they see this as a great challenge, increasing their interest in paying attention to the spelling rules.

When a child stands in front of the jury, they must be clear about the rules of the contest, which means that they must have: self-control, confidence and the great challenge of accepting that they can win or lose, which also challenges us to prepare them emotionally. It has been a great experience to watch the camaraderie and empathy among them, supporting others when they fail, affirming the bonds of friendship.

This year we had the opportunity to see foreign students participate and even win second place in the contest. We are very grateful for the results obtained in the academic and socio-emotional components of this activity.

Secondary School Literacy Contest

Interview to Ms. Porchik, Department Head of English Language Arts following the celebration of the Secondary School Literacy Contest in conjunction with the Spanish Department headed by Ms. Peralta.

Could you please share the objective of the event and how would you assess it?

The objective of the Literary Contest is to incentivize and encourage creative writing. The idea came from Ms. Dorca and initially it was performed within her Spanish class and over time has extended to ELA and Spanish departments. The works are assessed by each teacher according to their standards and what kind of writing they decide to work on with their group.

Have you seen more interest in a certain genre?

Students tend to get more engrossed in writing when it is creative (typically narratives and poems).

Were there any novelties to this year’s contest?

This year I noticed how proud students felt to be present at the ceremony .Those also were so positive toward each other and celebrated each other’s achievements in writing. I really loved the feedback aspect of this Literary Contest because the students really glowed when they received meaningful positive feedback from the community.

Something caught your attention in the works presented this year?

The level of expression that was shown in the groups that chose to do poems really impressed me.

How would you describe Ashton readers and writers?

Ashton readers and writers are expressive. They love to be creative and be given opportunities to develop their creativity.

Anything in particular you may want to share that would reinforce the importance of hosting this type of activity?

Being able to recognize and honor student work as a school is a very powerful way of reinforcing all of the hard work and effort students put into the classroom.

How can parents encourage participation? Or should it be left to self motivation?

Parents can ask to read their students’ work at home and give them positive feedback. Recognition of our students’ hard work is a great way to motivate.

Ashton response to Fiona

Counselors’ Corner: Reinforce your Child’s Identity

Dear Ashton Families,

As you are aware, the ideologies, worldviews and hyper sensuality to which our children are exposed through media and other outlets are constant and on the rise.  In coherence with our school’s vision and mission, we believe these ideologies undermine our families’ beliefs in social institutions, marriage and the family, and God’s perfect design for His creation of man and woman.  Instead, we want to provide our children with truthful and healthy information about these topics.

Our Counseling/Student Support, and Character Education departments will be sharing resources with you from time to time, to help families at home address these issues from a biblical worldview.  When curating content, our criteria will be to share resources that align with our families’ and school’s vision and mission.

Below you will find two useful links to help you have conversations with your children about topics that they are likely already encountering on TV, Internet and social media.  We firmly believe that a child’s heart needs to be nurtured and guarded in order for him/her to lead a successful, healthy, God-honoring life, for his own well-being and that of his/her community and world.  We want to accompany you in this process and offer our help in any way possible.

Thank you for your continued trust in allowing us to inspire minds and transform hearts.

STUCO Induction Ceremony

The Student Council for the school year 2021-2022 was formally presented after Monday’s Induction Ceremony.

Mr. Gavilan, as Dean of Students headed the ceremony, opening with these words:

“STUCO, you are here because you have met the academic and character requirements and also because you count on the support of your teachers and Academic Council to occupy your corresponding  positions from now on. It is a great honor for you to do so and we all feel very proud of you. Congratulations!

Just remember that the reason why one is chosen to be a leader is because that person has not only the necessary knowledge and skills, but also the heart to actively and empathetically listen to others, to try to feel their necessities in his own skin, to offer guidance and feedback, and to take preventive and reactive actions when needed. Being a leader equals being a servant. Don’t forget that.

Today you are inducted as Student Council of Ashton School in this 2021 – 2022 school year, precisely at a very particular stage of human history. I hope that the learning you have gained throughout these pandemic times contributes to shape the course of your actions with a balance of diligence, understanding and sensitivity.  On my part, I commit myself to give you the necessary support you need as leaders and as individuals. For that,  I ask for wisdom to the Lord. STUCO, once again, congratulations!”

8th Grade Retreat

One of our Guiding Principles is geared towards the Socio-Emotional, Spiritual and Character Development of every student

Every year, students go on a one day retreat where they are encouraged to participate in fun team building activities that promote the values that we embrace. Our school profile describes our commitment to having every student: demonstrate loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, responsible, honest, respectful and self-controlled behaviors and attitudes.

The retreats provide an excellent scenario to put those behaviors and attitudes in practice. It is our aim to provide an environment in which students enjoy school, are able to make friends and feel like an important member of the group.

Board of Directors Meeting

The focus of the Ashton Board of Directors has been to ensure that every child in the Ashton School receives a balanced, innovative education that is aligned with the school’s Mission, Vision and Purpose and prepares them to be productive members in a global society. The board is committed to supporting Ashton’s Continuous School Improvement Plan by making data-informed decisions that will enhance the learning experience for each child and those who deliver the desired high-quality education. Current research-based Best Practices training in board governance at each meeting has enabled this body to grow in its effectiveness in monitoring continuous improvement and in future planning. The board recognizes the importance of self-evaluation with annual reflection and discernment of its own work.

Student voice is recognized with a student representative who reports to the board valuable information from the students’ perspective as part of the board’s commitment to establish two-way communication and build leadership skills within the student population. While some board members are from other countries, Ashton faculty, students and parents have opportunities to meet and interact with all board members through planned events and activities with internal and external stakeholders. Board members acknowledge that it is a gift to serve in this capacity, where the greatest reward is seen in the faces of the precious lives they touch.
